Jorge Perez, MD, PhD, MRCP, MRCPath
Board Certified Oncologist/Hematologist
Jorge Perez received his medical education at some of the world's finest institutions, earned an MD, a PhD, and multiple board certifications. Yet while his credentials and training are impressive, what makes Jorge Perez an outstanding physician may have more to do with his heart than his head.
Born in Colombia, Dr. Perez earned a medical degree and practiced medicine in his native country before moving to England to complete a PhD in Cellular Biochemistry and residency in Internal Medicine and in Chemical Pathology. He continued his medical education in the United States with several fellowships including an oncology fellowship at the prestigious MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and Hematology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. With his international training and extensive research background, Dr. Perez could have taken his career in many directions, yet he chose one of the most demanding medical specialties - oncology.
It was during his training following medical school that Dr. Perez first witnessed the intense interaction between doctors and cancer patients. He wanted the ability to work that intimately with his patients and their families and collaborate closely on disease management. Oncology offered him that opportunity.
After working at MD Anderson Cancer Center and then in private practice in Houston for several years, Dr. Perez moved to Northern Nevada. He built Sierra Nevada Cancer Center as a culmination of everything he had learned and seen over the years with one major difference: he was making that big city cancer care available to patients in small and rural communities.
Access is a large part of Dr. Perez's mission. He believes advanced cancer care should be readily available to patients and their families, close to their homes, and staffed by compassionate, skilled professionals. He built his first state-of-the-art cancer center in Carson City, Nevada, and has since expanded to other undeserved communities in the region.
Dr. Perez’s dedication to his patients knows no bounds - literally. For them he is never more than a phone call away seven days a week, 24 hours a day. This is no small sacrifice for a busy, married physician with three young children, but it is one he feels is necessary in order to offer his patients peace of mind as they battle their disease.
